The end of July is fast approaching. The dog days of summer have left the Chicago area for a time and the breeze is off the lake. This has caused the sky to clear, pushing out the pollution and making the sky a brilliant blue. It’s quite nice and it’s a good time to check out those live outdoor shows. The Jazz and Blues Events in Chicago the Weekend of July 18 – 20

Another weekend is here. While I am planning on standing in lines and cramming into a movie theater to see The Dark Knight, you may have other plans or desire to see some live music. Thankfully, summer in Chicago is a great time for that. There is a jazz festival this weekend. Buddy Guy is having a CD release party at his club “Buddy Guy’s Legends.” It’s all here and a special thanks goes out, as always, to radio station WDCB for the information you find here.

This weekend is predicted to be a real scorcher here in the Midwest and Chicago in particular. I am sure the same people who, six months ago, couldn’t stop complaining about how cold it was and how much they wished it was summer, will now complain about it being too hot.

WDCB and their Jazz Thursdays

Every week I rave about Chicago radio station WDCB and what they do. I can’t help myself. Here in Chicago, our options are very limited when it comes to listening to jazz on the radio. At one time the local NPR outlet, during the nighttime hours, used to broadcast classic jazz music. Then someone decided that they should do other things and jazz fans lost a major outlet. Fortunately, this has been a major boon to humble College of DuPage, publicly-funded, suburban radio station WDCB.

They do a program just known as “All Things Jazz” and it runs all day long. In the evenings and on weekends, they break the all-jazz format and do news and community affairs programming. Granted, I would prefer a 24-hour all jazz radio station, but I don’t have to run a radio station on a college campus and that’s community funded. If anyone would like to front me a ton of money I’d love to start an all classic jazz radio station (you could even do that on AM since so many of those original jazz albums were recorded in mono) here in this town.

But I digress…

They do a lot to promote jazz and the exist entirely by donations and subscriptions from people like you and me. It’s pretty cool. It is a small price to pay for a few membership drives just to hear the British morning DJ who refers to himself as “Your British-American Buddy.” See, the entire station just oozes cool.

They also do and sponsor a lot of shows and it is all out in the suburbs. That means that you Chicago suburb-dwellers can enjoy great jazz just as much as those of you who live downtown. One of the things they sponsor is the WDCB JAZZ THURSDAYS which go all summer long.

Some Live Jazz and Blues Music in Chicago

This has been a very strange week for me. I have spent the entire week convinced it was actually the day before what it really was. So, I spent all of Tuesday convinced it was Monday. I spent Wednesday thinking it was Tuesday. Then I spent Tuesday night out with friends until very late and that just threw everything off. Have you ever had weeks like that? Sheesh!

WDCB is the radio station that provides me with the jazz and blues concerts and performances that you find here. I will never stop raving about this radio station. It’s a great station and it is entirely financed by listeners. I strongly urge you to listen to them online and, if you fall in love with it like I did, I urge you to become a supporter.

It look like a very busy weekend music-wise. There is another cool, totally free, jazz festival this Friday as well. I will have more on that tomorrow for you.

The Last Weekend in June for Chicago

The Glen Ellyn Jazz Festival

Just a reminder that another great free jazz festival is fast-approaching. I first started writing about the Glen Ellyn Jazz Festival months ago. I cannot believe that it is now close enough to July 12 that I can start writing about it as being right around the corner.

The festival is in beautiful downtown Glen Ellyn which is in the far western suburbs of Chicago. It is sponsored by the radio station WDCB which you hear me ranting and raving about at least at once a week. It is July 12 and it is totally, completely, wonderfully free of charge.

It is, at last, the weekend. I am a White Sox fan, but this weekend the Sox are in Cubs territory at Wrigley Field. As such, this may be a really good weekend to visit Chicago and check out a great live jazz show without running into too many actual Chicagoans. They may be in bars or busy getting in fist-fights somewhere.

Once again, radio station WDCB is the resource I used for this information. For some reason, they had no blues shows listed for this weekend.

OK, sorry about this one being so late. Heck, if you are in Chicago, you are probably already out and about doing things and seeing shows on a Saturday night. I do apologize. Between Father’s Day and it being my birthday, I just got caught up doing family things.

Chicago’s Weekend Concerts and Events

Well, the big event this weekend in Chicago is the TOTALLY FREE Blues on the Fox blues festival located in nearby Aurora Illinois. It is right on the Fox River and the big headliner is Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Sadly, I will not be able to attend as this weekend is also my birthday and my family went and made plans for Saturday night that did not include seeing Kenny Wayne Shepherd. More Jazz for the Weekend

Jeez, it’s a busy weekend as far as live music in Chicago this weekend. Not only is the 25th Annual Chicago Blues Festival (the largest totally free blues festival in the country, by the way) going on all weekend, but there are so many live jazz performances that I couldn’t fit the entire weekend on yesterday’s post. So, once again, I want to thank WDCB for the shows below.

By the way, I am still trying to find some way to post as I “fest” tomorrow. I have been testing Utterz and Spinvox. Utterz seems to work, but I have to go into my Utterz account and force the voicemails onto my blog instead of them posting by themselves, for some reason. As for Spinvox, I can’t seem to get that to work. That is supposed to convert my voicemails into text, but nothing ever appears on my blog.

So, I am going to do my best, but you may not get a true accounting of the day until late Saturday or sometime on Sunday.
