The end of July is fast approaching. The dog days of summer have left the Chicago area for a time and the breeze is off the lake. WDCB is a great radio station and you know I believe that. I rant and rave about that place and that station ad nauseum around here. But they are really a great source of information about jazz and blues music in and around the Chicago area and suburbs. In fact, since they are located in the suburbs, they are the finest source of suburban jazz music and concerts and festivals for those of you living in and around the Chicago area.

Another weekend is here. While I am planning on standing in lines and cramming into a movie theater to see The Dark Knight, you may have other plans or desire to see some live music. Every week I rave about Chicago radio station WDCB and what they do. I can’t help myself. Here in Chicago, our options are very limited when it comes to listening to jazz on the radio. At one time the local NPR outlet, during the nighttime hours, used to broadcast classic jazz music. Then someone decided that they should do other things and jazz fans lost a major outlet. Fortunately, this has been a major boon to humble College of DuPage, publicly-funded, suburban radio station WDCB.

This has been a very strange week for me. I have spent the entire week convinced it was actually the day before what it really was. So, I spent all of Tuesday convinced it was Monday. I spent Wednesday thinking it was Tuesday. Then I spent Tuesday night out with friends until very late and that just threw everything off. Have you ever had weeks like that? Sheesh!

Well, it is the last weekend in the month of June for 2008. I still cannot believe I am writing that. The mere thought that my niece’s birthday will be here before I know it, her first birthday, is just beyond my imagining. How does time move so fast?

It is, at last, the weekend. Most of the city of Chicago is caught up in the infamous “Crosstown Classic” which is when the Chicago White Sox baseball team and the Chicago Cubs bseball team face off in inter-league play. I am a White Sox fan, but this weekend the Sox are in Cubs territory at Wrigley Field. As such, this may be a really good weekend to visit Chicago and check out a great live jazz show without running into too many actual Chicagoans. They may be in bars or busy getting in fist-fights somewhere.

Well, the big event this weekend in Chicago is the TOTALLY FREE Blues on the Fox blues festival located in nearby Aurora Illinois. It is right on the Fox River and the big headliner is Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Sadly, I will not be able to attend as this weekend is also my birthday and my family went and made plans for Saturday night that did not include seeing Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Jeez, it’s a busy weekend as far as live music in Chicago this weekend. Not only is the 25th Annual Chicago Blues Festival (the largest totally free blues festival in the country, by the way) going on all weekend, but there are so many live jazz performances that I couldn’t fit the entire weekend on yesterday’s post.
