Jazz & Blues Lounge

I know this is a day late. That’s what happens when your critical lifeline, AllAboutJazz.com, goes down and won’t come up during the time I slot to write this particular blog. That’s what happened to me on Tuesday and I had to go with another blog about the Chicago Jazz Festival. I hate it when my personal schedule gets disrupted.

The new releases are here again. If you recall, and you can page down if you don’t, I was talking about the website called AllAbouJazz.com for one of the best places on the web for jazz information and news. I raved about thta yesterday, and today I am using them because it is the big day for new releases and reissues.

I was a punk kid who was into Pink Floyd. What I really wanted to do was be on the radio. I thought I was going to be the next Howard Stern or, more likely, the next Steve and Garry (two Chicago radio legends). I had worked at the tiny AM station that my college, Webster University, has created first. Can you believe it’s July 15 already? I know, I keep harping on how fast things are flying this year, or every year, but it’s so true. It seems like just yesterday that everyone was complaining about how brutal the winter was and I was slipping and falling on the ice while trying to get into my car. Now, it’s brutally hot and there are severe thunderstorms every other day and everyone is complaining about the heat.

The summer is speeding past like a speeding bullet. Nothing makes that slow down just a little bit more than a cool jazz or blues album or tune to add to your collection. I do not have a record player myself, but when I worked at the jazz radio station, we would sometimes get the tunes on vinyl. I actually learned how to cue up a record just like the old-time DJs. It is officially July. I know, as I have said here many times in the past few weeks, I can’t belive it either. I can’t believe how fast this year has gone so far. I cannot believe it is now summer and we are almost in the month of July. Who the heck hit the Fast-Forward button on my life and why didn’t they bother to tell me about it? Yes, I know, this is supposed to be my time to tell you about the jazz and blues festivals all over the Midwest. Well, you have made it to another Tuesday. I am starting to feel like there has been a definite switch from Jazz to Blues around here lately. What can I say, for some reason the event and festival planners around here seem to have wanted to start off the season with Blues Festivals galore. Well, the 25th Annual Chicago Blues Festival kicked off officially today. I did not get a chance to go downtown and see the concerts today because I have this, you know, job thing to take care of. However, thanks to radio station WXRT I was able to listen to performers from the Blues Festival. XRT is a great radio station and they still play a lot of blues music.
