If you do not know of him, you really should. In my opinion he is one of the greatest living guitar players around. He first burts onto the scene back in the late 90s as a nineteen-year-old with amazing guitar licks and apparently channeling the spirit of Stevie Ray Vaughan. His first big album that got lots of radio play was “Trouble Is” and it contained what is still one of my all-time favorite songs “Blue on Black.”

As always, I turned to YouTube and found Kenny and his band performing an acoustic version of this song for your enjoyment:

So, while some may accuse me of featuring an artist who is not technically a blues performer, I would have to say you are incorrect there. Just like Stevie Ray is known as a rocker these days, he did plenty of great blues tunes.

Here’s a live performance of Kenny doing “Shotgun Blues:”

Kenny is a bit like Carlos Santana in that he doesn’t do the singing. He lets his guitar do the work for him and, as you can see, that is more than enough.

So, if you are in town and want to see a great performance, I have to recomend the Kenny Wayne Shepherd one at “Blues on the Fox” this weekend. Sadly, because it is my birthday this weekend and I am out doing family birthday stuff that night, I will not be able to attend. If you do, however, and want to write about it here, just let me know.

Post from: Jazz & Blues Lounge

More Jazz for the Weekend

Bands

Chicago

blues

jazz

jazz clubs

blues_clubs

Clubs

concerts

jazz_clubs

live_music

music

musicians

suburbs

WDCB

Jeez, it’s a busy weekend as far as live music in Chicago this weekend. Granted, you would think the world was going to end the way the weather people are going on about the thunderstorms that are supposed to come through here on Friday into Saturday. Still, what better place to take shelter than a dark jazz or blues club? Heck the old smoke caked on the walls probably have reinforced the brick and beams enough for it to withstand a nuclear blast.

JAZZ

May 29, 2008
Vocalist Petra van Nuis with the Andy Brown Trio
Crimson Lounge, Chicago

May 29, 2008
Vocalist Petra van Nuis and Guitarist Andy Brown
Angelina Ristorante, Chicago

May 29, 2008
Scott Earl Holman
Chicago Chop House, Chicago

May 29, 2008
Live Jazz Thursday at Vintage Wine Bar and Restaurant
Vintage Wine Bar, Chicago

May 29, 2008
The Skinny
Pete Miller’s – Evanston, Evanston

May 29, 2008
WDCB Jazz Thursdays at Adelle’s
Paul Abella Trio
Adelle’s, Wheaton

May 29, 2008
Bill McFarland & The Chicago Horns
Katerina’s, Chicago

May 29, 2008
John Wright Trio
Philander’s, Oak Park

May 29, 2008
Myles Hayes Quintet
Pete Miller’s – Schaumburg, Schaumburg

May 29, 2008
Chambers Jazz Jam
Chambers, Niles

May 29, 2008
Skinny Williams Trio
Pete Miller’s – Wheeling, Wheeling

May 29, 2008
Tammy McCann Quartet
Pops for Champagne, Chicago

May 29, 2008
Alan Gresik’s Swing Shift Orchestra
Green Mill, Chicago

May 29, 2008
Kelly Brand Trio
Andy’s, Chicago

May 29, 2008
Pianist Steve Million
Velvet Lounge (new location), Chicago

May 29, 2008
Jeff Parker Organ Quartet
Velvet Lounge (new location), Chicago

May 30, 2008
Green Mill Quartet Jam Session
Green Mill, Chicago

May 30, 2008
Hopefest
Park West, Chicago

May 30, 2008
Bruce Oscar/Nick Schneider Duo
Wildwood Steakhouse and Lounge, Geneva

May 30, 2008
Yoko Noge & Jazz Me Blues
Katerina’s, Chicago

BLUES

May 31, 2008
JTodd’s presents 40 Miles to Chicago
JTodd’s, Plainfield

THANKS, AS ALWAYS TO RADIO STATION WDCB FOR THE INFORMATION POSTED ABOVE. You know, we are required to have a minimum number of articles per week around here at b5media. I don’t know how keen on my giving you inside details the higher-ups are, but it’s true. We have to post a minimum of 6 posts a week cuz, we actually do get paid to be this cool and write about such cool sh**.

Well, I was having one of those days, you know, where I am running around doing laundry and other errands, convinced I had written an entry last night that would post this morning. You know, we can do that do, right? I just learned it myself and became convinced by some others that it was the way to go. I used to just write one post a day, anytime of day, and post it right then and there, and that way I knew I was covered.

Well, now that I post ahead of time, I tend to lose track of what posted when. So, the thing that posted yesterday, I wrote Thursday night, etc., etc. I think you get the picture.

It was when I came back to the ol’ apartment I realized that I had not posted anything for today and, even now, as I write this I am not sure. Thankfully, WDCB has more shows, particulary jazz shows, that are going on during this long weekend, thus giving me at least one thing jazz-related to write about.

So, get out and see a show this weekend and enjoy. If you do it, then get back to me and tell me how it was, I’d be glad to post your review here.

JAZZ

May 25, 2008
Scott Earl Holman
Chicago Chop House, Chicago

May 25, 2008
Mulligan Mosaics Big Band
FitzGerald’s, Berwyn

May 25, 2008
Jazz Jam Session
Velvet Lounge (new location), Chicago

May 25, 2008
Checker Jazz
Checkerboard Lounge, Chicago

May 25, 2008
Andy’s Jazz Brunch
Andy’s, Chicago

May 25, 2008
Kimberly Gordon Organ Trio
Green Mill, Chicago

May 25, 2008
Alison Ruble Quartet
Andy’s, Chicago

May 25, 2008
Andy’s Jam Session
Andy’s, Chicago

May 26, 2008
Monday Night Jazz Jam Session
Psistaria Greek Restaurant, Lincolnwood

May 26, 2008
Paul Abella Trio
Andy’s, Chicago

Post from: Jazz & Blues Lounge
