Well, this is what many people consider to be the official start of the summer season. It is officially Memorial Day Weekend. That, at the very least, means it is time for you to kick back, dust off the barbecue grill, and maybe open the pool. You should, at least, get a day off to boot. Well, the weekend is here again and if you don’t mind dodging hail, lightning bolts and funnel clouds, you may want to head out and check out a live performance. There are a lot of great musicans out there in the jazz and blues genres that don’t necessarily have record contracts and such. This weekend, though, the weather dude is predicting storms. The same system that brought exciting tornado footage from Oklahoma is now crossing the Chicago area. So, that just adds a little extra spice to the whole going to the show thing.

Well, Mother Nature has pulled a nice prank on everyone around here.  Last nigh a bunch of really nasty and severe thunderstorms came through and by this morning, the general air temperature had fallen into the 30s.  It went from Spring into Winter within a matter of twelve hours.  You just have to love Springtime in the Midwest, don’t you?

The weekend has finally arrived.  It is going to be a relatively nice weekend in the ol’ Windy City.  While I have always said that going to a jazz or blues club is best when the weather is crap, it’s also great when the weather is nice.  You can walk to many of the clubs downtown and if you have to wait outside for the place to open it’s no so bad.  Granted, they are also calling for some rain on Friday night, but why quibble.

There are more concerts and performances this weekend in Chicago and the suburbs.  It looks to be a very nice and warm weekend, and hopefully the rest of it will be earthquake free.  Still, if you are dancing in a blues or jazz club, you may not even notice it when the earth shakes.  I only felt the aftershock myself, not the one that hit at 4:30 in the morning, but evidently those of you in the high-rise apartments dowtown felt that earlier one.  Guess there is a price to pay beyond the hundreds of thousands of dollars those condos …read more

Here in Chicago the weather is finally turning from the brutal thing it was all winter into something almost pleasant.  You still need a jacket, but it may almost be time to put away the one that makes you look like the Michelin Man.  That means festival season will be starting soon.  While the big ones are the Blues Festival that kicks it off and the Jazz Festival that ends it, there are smaller ones all over the suburbs.  I will be keeping an eye out for those very soon.

Time to take a look at the weekend that is fast approaching for the Chicago area.  I am actually going to be visiting my brother and baby niece in Milwaukee this weekend, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy a fine jazz or blues show in and around the Windy City.  Maybe I will check out the jazz scene in Milwaukee and do some reporting on that next week.  I always feel bad that my scope is so narrow, but I am just one man and I happen to live in Chicago.
