The Jazz and Blues Shows for the Weekend of August 1

Well, the month of July is now in the history books for the year of 2008. It’s hotter than all hell here in the Windy City, but there’s nothing cooler than hanging out in a jazz or blues club and checking out a show. Of course, when looking at the calendar for both genres of music at WDCB, there isn’t much in the way of blues shows listed there.

Of course, the city is holding its breath for the Lollapalooza show this weekend. Why they always manage to end up doing that on the hottest damn weekend of the summer, I have no idea. So, this city will be crowded with young people with various things pierced and lots of tattoos and wearing interesting clothing. It may be a good time to check out a jazz show.

Checking in with the Daughter of a Blues Man

Earlier this year you may remember me raving about Cassie Taylor, the daughter of the great blues musician Otis Taylor. Cassie is a fantastic musician in her own right, of course, and I mean no slight by mentioning her father. I saw her at the Chicago Blues Festival last month and I was captivated. Not only is she gorgeous, she is also very talented. She also was trying to get onto the Blues Foundation as one of the youngest members.

Unfortunately, I have not heard from her since that time. I did hope to get an interview with her, but the time for the nomination is over and there are no updated on her MySpace page (linked above) which indicate whether or not she achieved that nomination. I am hoping she did. but then, I am a tad smitten and a tad biased. Yes, that is creepy, but I don’t care.

So, I wanted to write about her again, just because she and her music have been on my mind lately. I love promoting people who can use an ever-widening audience, much like I did with the Sad Salamanders last year and earlier this year (was it only this year that I started with those guys?).

I think Cassie is already very talented. I think if you have a way to find the Otis Taylor Band, you should beg, borrow and steal to get to see a show. They are truly one of the best live bands you are likely to see and if you love blues music, you need to see them. I think that Cassie, being as young as she is, will only go on to bigger and better things.

Of course, if you loyal readers of this particular blog happen to check out her MySpace page and send a message to her that you read about her right here, well, who am I to stop you? Maybe she’ll give me that interview after all. And, of course, I also believe all attractive women, musician or otherwise, should develop a sudden attraction to portly, bearded, glasses-wearing writers from Chicago.

Some Live Jazz and Blues Music in Chicago

This has been a very strange week for me. I have spent the entire week convinced it was actually the day before what it really was. So, I spent all of Tuesday convinced it was Monday. I spent Wednesday thinking it was Tuesday. Then I spent Tuesday night out with friends until very late and that just threw everything off. Have you ever had weeks like that? Sheesh!

WDCB is the radio station that provides me with the jazz and blues concerts and performances that you find here. I will never stop raving about this radio station. It’s a great station and it is entirely financed by listeners. I strongly urge you to listen to them online and, if you fall in love with it like I did, I urge you to become a supporter.

It look like a very busy weekend music-wise. There is another cool, totally free, jazz festival this Friday as well. I will have more on that tomorrow for you.

Like Smooth Jazz? Well Chicago has a Club for That

I am not really a fan of Smooth Jazz. To me, this music is like the stuff you hear in a doctor’s office. Kenny G is smooth jazz and to me, that just isn’t really jazz. I know he plays a saxophone, but there are too many synthesizers and things going on. I like horns and I like drums and bass and long meandering solos. To me, that’s what jazz is. Like I have said many times, Miles Davis is real jazz. Kenny G and his ilk are not.

But there must be people who like smooth jazz. I can tell because there has been a successful smooth jazz radio station here in Chicago for a very long time. It takes a lot of work to keep a radio station up and running, and WNUA manages to stay on the air year after year.

Apparently there is exactly one smooth jazz club here in Chicago and it is called Close Up Jazz or CU2. Apparently they also have some kind of smooth jazz festival there every year, but I can’t really tell when it is for 2008 from the website.

According to the wording on their website: “Close Up (CU2) is a smooth jazz club which features live smooth jazz, in a contemporary upscale environment with an ethnic diverse professional clientele. CU2 is located in downtown Chicago in the heart of the financial district, one block from the Board of Trade. CU2 is the only live smooth jazz club in Chicago. CU2 will feature the best of local and nationally recognized smooth jazz artists. CU2 will also have VIP memberships, which will entitle members to free valet parking, free birthday party, free admission and much more. All inquires regarding corporate or private events, please contact CU2 Management Team after 3 p.m. Tuesday thru Friday at 312.385.1111.”

The Last Weekend in June for Chicago

Well, it is the last weekend in the month of June for 2008. I still cannot believe I am writing that. The mere thought that my niece’s birthday will be here before I know it, her first birthday, is just beyond my imagining. How does time move so fast?

Well, the big event this weekend in Chicago is the TOTALLY FREE Blues on the Fox blues festival located in nearby Aurora Illinois. It is right on the Fox River and the big headliner is Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Sadly, I will not be able to attend as this weekend is also my birthday and my family went and made plans for Saturday night that did not include seeing Kenny Wayne Shepherd. More Jazz for the Weekend

Jeez, it’s a busy weekend as far as live music in Chicago this weekend. Not only is the 25th Annual Chicago Blues Festival (the largest totally free blues festival in the country, by the way) going on all weekend, but there are so many live jazz performances that I couldn’t fit the entire weekend on yesterday’s post. So, once again, I want to thank WDCB for the shows below.

By the way, I am still trying to find some way to post as I “fest” tomorrow. I have been testing Utterz and Spinvox. Utterz seems to work, but I have to go into my Utterz account and force the voicemails onto my blog instead of them posting by themselves, for some reason. As for Spinvox, I can’t seem to get that to work. That is supposed to convert my voicemails into text, but nothing ever appears on my blog.

So, I am going to do my best, but you may not get a true accounting of the day until late Saturday or sometime on Sunday.

Other Shows Going on Around Chicago

Of course, as I have been saying all week, the big thing going on this weekend in Chicago is the 25th Annual Chicago Blues Festival. However, there are other shows going on in and around town here in the Windy City. The weather is predicted to be very warm and humid with a good chance of showers and thunderstorms. As such, maybe you would rather head indoors where there is a roof and air conditioning while the rest of us are standing outside in the heat and rain catching the blues.

The Weekend of May 30th

The weekend is here and so is the month of June. I cannot believe that June is here, people. That means the year is already almost half over. How is that even possible? We have yet to have an actual spring yet here in Chicago.

Still, the weather is supposed to be pretty nice here in Chicago this weekend. Granted, you would think the world was going to end the way the weather people are going on about the thunderstorms that are supposed to come through here on Friday into Saturday. Still, what better place to take shelter than a dark jazz or blues club? Heck the old smoke caked on the walls probably have reinforced the brick and beams enough for it to withstand a nuclear blast.
