The Christmas Entry

The Christmas Entry

Well, I for one had a really great Christmas.  I spent most of it looking at my baby niece and marveling at the fact that she was so beautiful and starting to respond to my voice, make noises back at me and look around and notice things.  I mean, really, how incredibly cool is that.  I can also say, without a doubt, that she is the cutest baby in the history of babies.  Then again, I might be a tad biased.
I will confess, I had a remarkably music-free Christmas, however.  Much of the focus was on the baby and the …read more

Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas

Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas

Hello one and all.  Thanks again for making 2007 a great year here.  I hope I have managed to entertain you a few times, at the very least and, perhaps, opened your eyes to some new music.  I hope to continue to do both of those things throughout 2008.
Since I cannot say for sure I will be able to post tomorrow, which is Christmas Day, I thought I would post my holiday greeting today.
So, to all of you out there I wish you and your family’s a very, very happy holiday, Merry Christmas and a safte return to this blog as …read more

Just a Quick Message…

Just a Quick Message…

Not too much to write about tonight.  I just wanted to drop a quick line to all of my regular readers and wish you a very safe and happy holiday weekend.  It’s a crazy weekend.  I know, I was out in the crowds just trying to get my grocery shopping done.
So, take your favorite jazz and blues music with you wherever your travels may take you for the holiday.  Be careful at those Christmas parties and drive safely.  I hope you all get your favorite musicians, music, CD collections and what-not for Christmas.
Thanks for reading this blog on a regular …read more

A New CD I Thought You Might Like

A New CD I Thought You Might Like

I was doing some poking around online and found some new music you migh like.  Of cousre, I also mixed up some medication this morning and instead of taking my acid reflux meds, took a Melatonin pill that has all but put me in a coma all day.  As such, I will be lucky to get a few paragraphs written here.
Although it is well documented that I love the horn players, particularly the trumpet players I do love other instruments used in jazz.  I am a big fan of Lionel Hampton, for example, and he plays the vibes.  I love …read more

Christmas Jazz

Christmas Jazz

There is nothing quite like Christmas music.  You might think that Christmas music and jazz are just mutually exclusive.  Well, you would be wrong.
Back when I worked at the college radio station that played jazz, when Christmas time came around, there was a sudden proliferation of jazz CDs and records for us to play.  For a time it was even required for us to play one Christmas tune an hour.  While almost all of the jazz vocalists had released Christmas albums, for those of us who enjoyed instrumentals, it was slim pickins.  Except for one guy that you may not …read more

One More Suggestion for Christmas

One More Suggestion for Christmas

I love reading entertainment magazines.  I hate to admit that I find interviews with movie stars compelling reading.  At the very least, I read “Entertainment Weekly” which actually discusses movies and doesn’t just show pictures of whomever Jessica Simpson is dating.
They also provide cool information about things like Miles Davis box sets.  Yes,  it is another edition of my “Bryan’s Wish List of Box Sets.”  This one is called “Miles Davis:  The Complete On the Corner Sessions.”
According to the information found at Amazon.com:  “Miles Davis’ The Complete On The Corner Sessions, the eighth and final deluxe box set in the …read more

Happy Holidays and “Happy Jazz”

Happy Holidays and “Happy Jazz”

First off, I wanted to write to all of you great readers out there and tell you that I am most thankful on this Thanksgiving for all of you.  I love writing in this blog and talking about this kind of music.  It isn’t always easy.  Sometimes coming up with something to write about is the most difficult part of my entire day.  But I am grateful for the outlet and for regular readers like Chip and others.
So, I know this is a bit late, but I do hope all of you have a great holiday and weekend.  I hope …read more

More Stuff for your Christmas List

More Stuff for your Christmas List

I hate to keep shilling for things without being given huge amounts of stuff for free .  However, I just did some more shopping for myself and started salivating again for at least three more CD box sets.
1.  Miles Davis:  in Stockholm, 1960 Complete.  Yeah, it’s 4 discs and also features Miles playing with John Coltrane and Sonny Stitt.
2.  The Complete Miles Davis at Montreux: 1973 – 1991.  There are 20 discs in this box set!  TWENTY!  Just imagine me doing a Homer Simpson-type slack-jawed drool and you get the idea.
3.  Miles Davis Quintent Live at the 1963 Monterey …read more

Box Sets to Get You Salivating

Box Sets to Get You Salivating

The Christmas season is here which means people will soon be pestering me for things to buy me for the season.  Thankfully, being a fan of jazz, this usually  means I can find some jazz box sets or compilations to help round out my collection.  As I have mentioned before, those compilations and boxed sets are some of the best ways to get a wide variety of music, especially for some classic artists like Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker.
So, I decided to take a peek at Amazon.com and look at their Jazz Box Sets.  Some of these look interesting to …read more
