The cool thing about it, and the amazing thing, is that the entire website and the organization is run by volunteers. Their writers are volunteers and their website people are volunteers. As such, it is really a community effort, created by jazz lovers for jazz lover.

Right now, if you click on the link at the front of this article, you will see they are doing something they are calling their “Open Jazz Project.” Essentially, they are looking for more volunteers. They want more people to help them achieve their goal and their vision.

Again, from their website, “We’re looking for musician profiles editors (similar to users who create and maintain wikipedia bios), jazz news editors, MP3 download of the day editors, this day in jazz history editors, directory editors (who build and maintain, for example, our venue and festival listings), CD and live event reviewers, interview editors, CD review editors, local evangelists, musician outreach specialists, and more.”

So, check out their website. Tell them you heard about it from this blog. Then, if you have the time, talent or the inclination, you may want to contact them and volunteer. We can all make jazz better and I personally think it’s a worthy effort.

Now, I am not really here to mourn the loss of this organization. I like to think I can follow various events in the jazz world, but until I came across this particular article I had never even heard of the IAJE. This, of course, may be exactly the problem. They were an organization with a goal of promoting jazz music across the country and I had never heard of them. Obviously they weren’t doing something right.

The article indicates that a major mistake seems to have been moving the organization back to Toronto from its location in New York. This reduced the audiences for their various sponsored events by more than half. They also apparently launched several ill-conceived campaigns that never really took off or succeeded on even a basic level.

I find that sort of sad. Jazz can be a very hard sell to people, especially the younger people of today. I know it was for me until I reached college. I think there is a lot of music out there that can be taught to young people and, in particular, aspiring young musicians. An organization that can promote and educate those people would be perfect. It would just be nice to have one that was run correctly.

I don’t exactly have an answer to the problem. The organization has filed for bankruptcy and the assets of the organization have been parceled to a trustee. What will become of the IAJE after that is unknown, but it seems likely to be gone forever. That means one less advocate or group of advocates for an important genre of music.

That’s never a good thing.

For me, I have never been a huge fan of Mr. Dolphy.  Mostly this is due to ignorance.  Much of my jazz training came from working at that all-jazz radio station I worked at when I was in college.  We had a lot of Miles and Parker and Mingus and others, but we had little if any Eric Dolphy.  As such, I have not really had much of a chance to listen to him.

I do know that his name is mentioned when other people talk about true jazz innovators.  Of course, I have also heard his name mentioned in the same breath as Ornette Coleman, who happens to be a guy I just cannot stand.  Mr. Coleman may have been a very nice gentleman, and I appreciate anyone attempting to take a chance with music and his art, but to me his stuff sounds like noise.  If I put on an Ornette Coleman album and the needle just screeched across the record, I probably would not know the difference between that and his music until someone called into the station.

I don’t believe Dolphy was quite that way.  Now, the article comes from AllAboutJazz.com which is a great website for jazz lovers.  It is a great place to find music reviews and just about everything you can want to know about up-coming releases.  They also have some great and informative articles, and today this one about Eric Dolphy caught my eye.

I am not sure it has convinced me to seek out any Eric Dolphy, but I do always want to expand my jazz horizons.  I do believe everyone should take a chance with music even if that chance turns out to be a failure.  Just getting comfortable with things like art and music is a dangerous thing, I feel and can lead to the death of your imagination.
