Educating the Reader

by balaspa on March 26th, 2008

I feel like I have not done enough to provide education to all of you faithful readers out there.  There was a time several months ago when I used to try to do at least one article a week that was about a particular artist or area of the jazz or blues genre.  People really seemed to like these, but they were a lot of work.  I love doing research, mind you, and I write non-fiction books that require lots and lots of research.  The problem is, I also have this full-time job and it makes it tough to do that now.  I bet if you look at my postings, you will notice a serious drop off in those articles after September, when I started working full-time.

So, I found this article, which you can find right HERE.  The article is by a guy named Mel Martin and it is entitled “What Makes Modern Jazz Modern” and it is basically a term paper about jazz.  It has more history of jazz in its pages than just about anything else I have seen and may have even more than Ken Burns’ “Jazz” documentary series.

It covers all of the bases.  It talks about all of the jazz greats and places them in their proper spot.  I have not had a chance to read the entire thing, but this is pretty extensive stuff.

Of course, for me, jazz begins and just about ends with Miles Davis, but that is a matter of personal taste.  I know there are greats out there today and there were greats before him.  My own personal feelings about Louis Armstrong have grown and deepened over the years.  I get angered that Louis is often dismissed by those who really don’t know how profoundly he affected an entire genre of music.

So, read up and educate yourself.  I can’t do everything around here!  ;-)
