Chicago Loses Major Jazz Radio Outlet
by balaspa on June 18th, 2007
WBEZ, the public radio station in
Chicago, and one of
the last of the major broadcasting stations with jazz content, has bowed to the pressure of the internet and iPod and ceased its jazz broadcasting.
The station used to broadcast jazz in the evening and overnight hours during the week and into the weekend.
The station has now moved to a 24-hour news and public affairs format.
Many loyal listeners have been very disappointed with this decision by the public broadcasting outlet. Some have expressed dismay and concern that they have been “abandoned.”
The list of classic jazz stations in the
Chicago area has dwindled to, essentially, one station.
WDCB which broadcast out of the far-west suburbs and the
College of
DuPage campus is still the only station which is exclusively classic jazz.
It too is publicly funded and they do stream on the internet, but their signal is not easily picked up in the city.
The city of
Chicago, a major hub of jazz and blues, also has Smooth Jazz station WNUA, but many hardcore jazz fans feel this station does not represent their tastes in the way WBEZ did.
For now
Chicago jazz listeners and left with finding their jazz online or at the far end of the dial, while driving in the far-west suburbs.
