It’s an organization dedicated to promoting jazz and jazz music in and around Chicago. They sponsors and put together and promote all kinds of jazz performances and jazz education programs. They are a very cool organization and they do good work for a form of music that far too many people don’t know enough about. Too many people find jazz intimidating or off-putting and that’s too bad.

One of the up-coming events is the performance of the Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble. What’s the Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble? Well, according to the JIC website:

“Caribbean music and jazz have had close connections from the beginning of the last century. Composers and soloists from Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington to Chick Corea have been inspired by Juan Tizol, Chano Pozo and Mongo Santamaria. Gillespie widened the scope in the 90s with his United Nations Orchestra and in Chicago, the Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble (CALJE) continues the multinational quest by incorporating Afro-Cuban Jazz, Brazilian Jazz, Flamenco, Central American and Peruvian folkloric rhythms into their compositions while staying true to Latin Jazz traditions. Founded by Mexican born trumpeter/composer, Victor Garcia and Nicaraguan born pianist/composer, Darwin Alejandro Noguera tonight’s concert features Chicago’s finest Latin jazz performers, with guests Steve Turre (trombone, shells); Paoli Mejias (percussion); Howard Levy (piano/harmonica) and Brian Lynch (trumpet).”

They have a performance coming up right at the end of July. You will definitely want to add this to your list of things to do if you happen to live in Chicago or you are planning on being in Chicago on July 31.

WHEN? Thursday July 31, 2008

WHAT TIME? 6:30 p.m.

WHERE? Millenium Park Michigan & Washington Chicago, IL

Millenium Park is an awesome place to see a show. It is right downtown, in the heart of Chicago. The Pritzker Pavillion is a Ghery-designed stage and lawn. You really need to see it o believe it. You can watch great performers and listen to great music beneath the stars, with the lights of the city of Chicago winking all around you. What more could you want?

Post from: Jazz & Blues Lounge

Your Chicago Blues Festival Coverage

Bands

Buddy Guy

Chicago

Festivals

blues

blues_musicians

Chicago_Blues_Festival

city_of_chicago

music

musicians

music_festivals

If this works the way the Utterz people say it will, you should be able to hear my posts live from the 25th Annual Chicago Blues Festival on Saturday June 7, 2008. Just like I do understand that there are other jazz musicians out there besides Miles Davis. I just get into these moods. Right now, I am in the Buddy Guy mode when it comes to my blues music. Since my friend gave me the album “Sweet Tea” I have been listening to him on a nearly daily basis.

So, I decided to look online, and at YouTube, and see if I could find another performance or tune or something. I was looking just for my own amusement, not entirely sure it would be something I would want to share here. Needless to say YouTube is loaded with performances of Buddy.

Then I came across this one and, well, I just had to share:

Look at that kid play! Holy crap! I had dreams of playing the guitar when I was younger. I even took lessons for about six months. It took about six months for me to determine that I was cursed with stubby, uncoordinated fingers that would never be able to hold down the string and play chords. I also realized I had no ear for music and playing music. As such, Jimi Hedrix’s legacy was safe from me.

Had I even a fraction of this kid’s talent, well, I wouldn’t be writing here. I would be on tour somewhere and picking which groupies I would be sleeping with tonight.

I love the part when he and Buddy exchange licks, with Buddy playing and the kid playing them back. That’s some impressive stuff right there.

Post from: Jazz & Blues Lounge

Catching a Jazz or Blues Show

Bands

Buddy Guy

Chicago

blues

jazz

jazz clubs

the Green Mill

blues_clubs

Clubs

concerts

jazz_clubs

live_music

music

musicians

suburbs

WDCB

Yet another weekend is upon us folks. It is a good morning for me because I have found some new music to love. You see, and as you may have noticed, I am more of a jazz guy than a blues guy. Why? Well, I fell in love with jazz first because of the time I spent at a college radio station that played jazz. I have tried to get into the blues, but something never quite clicke with me. It was OK, I appreciated it, I liked songs and parts of it, but something about it never quite grabbed me.

One thing is for sure, the jazz people seem to have things together a bit more than the blues people. For example, there are several websites that I can go to in order to get the latest news on jazz, jazz musicians, new releases, CD reviews and whatever. There is AllAboutJazz.com and the JazzReview.com, for example. There is also WDCB and other radio stations around the country that are dedicated almost exclusively to jazz music. That is just not the case with the Blues.

I have looked in order to make, or attempt to make, this blog balanced, for a Blues News website. I have continually come up empty. There are many radio stations, including WDCB, that play Blues in addition to some other format, but there aren’t radio stations dedicated solely to the blues. I have no idea why, but that’s just a fact of life.

So, I haven’t been able to keep up on the blues as much as I would have liked. So, I recently had dinner with a friend of mine. She mentioned she had always wanted to get more into jazz and I mentioned I had always wanted to get more into the blues. She is a big fan of the blues. As you know, I am a big fan of jazz. Before you could say “burn” we were exchanging CDs and making copies for each other.

So, I finally had a chance to sit down and listen to a Buddy Guy CD she gave me last night. It is not a new one. It is from 2001 and called “Sweet Tea.” Now, I love Buddy. I have since I saw him inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and saw him perform live. He blew me away. He may be the greatest modern, living blues guitar player out there. Maybe about as close as Hendrix as you can get and considering Jimi cited Buddy as a major inspiration to him, that gives you some idea.

One song in particular blew me through the back of the chair. It is the second song on the album. It is called “Baby Please Don’t Leave Me.” Buckle up and enjoy.

Post from: Jazz & Blues Lounge

Checking out the Chicago Area and the Suburbs

Bands

Buddy Guy

Chicago

blues

jazz

jazz clubs

the Green Mill

blues_clubs

Clubs

concerts

jazz_clubs

music

musicians

performances

suburbs

WDCB

Well, the weekend is here again and if you don’t mind dodging hail, lightning bolts and funnel clouds, you may want to head out and check out a live performance. The same system that brought exciting tornado footage from Oklahoma is now crossing the Chicago area.
