Jazz & Blues Lounge

Well, the month of July is now in the history books for the year of 2008. It’s hotter than all hell here in the Windy City, but there’s nothing cooler than hanging out in a jazz or blues club and checking out a show. Of course, when looking at the calendar for both genres of music at WDCB, there isn’t much in the way of blues shows listed there.

The end of July is fast approaching. The dog days of summer have left the Chicago area for a time and the breeze is off the lake. This has caused the sky to clear, pushing out the pollution and making the sky a brilliant blue. It’s quite nice and it’s a good time to check out those live outdoor shows. Another weekend is here. While I am planning on standing in lines and cramming into a movie theater to see The Dark Knight, you may have other plans or desire to see some live music. Earlier this year you may remember me raving about Cassie Taylor, the daughter of the great blues musician Otis Taylor. Cassie is a fantastic musician in her own right, of course, and I mean no slight by mentioning her father. I saw her at the Chicago Blues Festival last month and I was captivated. Not only is she gorgeous, she is also very talented. She also was trying to get onto the Blues Foundation as one of the youngest members.

This has been a very strange week for me. I have spent the entire week convinced it was actually the day before what it really was. So, I spent all of Tuesday convinced it was Monday. I spent Wednesday thinking it was Tuesday. Then I spent Tuesday night out with friends until very late and that just threw everything off. Have you ever had weeks like that? Sheesh!

It turns out that there are just a ton of these festivals keeping blues music alive all across this amazing planet of ours. There is likely to be one within a decent distance from where you live. It’s a holiday weekend here in the States. It reminds me of the question, “Do they have the 4th of July in Great Britain?” Well, of course the answer is yes, it’s the 4th of July everywhere. They don’t celebrate Independence Day, however. Get it? Har-dee-har-har.

Well, I have to admit, the blues people have done a pretty good job of getting lots and lots of blues festivals together. The peopl who do all of the jazz stuff have a lot of websites and magazines, and the blues folks don’t quite have that down, but the blues folks have lots and lots of festivals.
