The B5Media network:

The Online Methods

Of course, there are online methods to listen to jazz on the radio.  The two best, at least for me, come from a cable company and the other from a multi-channel online radio station located right here in Chicago.

Comcast provides something called Comcast Rhapsody Radio.  They have several jazz channels including a smooth jazz channel.  I love their jazz club channel.  They play the kind of classic jazz that I love and they play some stuff you are likely to find as new.  I have discovered some new names and talents while listening there and added them to my list of artists to watch.  It is all done without commercials and DJs, but you can link to the various albums and find out more information.

While I know that many people love the online radio station called Pandora these days, but for me, the best one out there is AccuRadio.  AccuRadio I found completely by accident.  They are one of the largest online radio station out there, with a seemingly unlimited number of radio channels.  Not only do they have every kind of jazz you could want, but I also love their “Classic Rocktopia” channel as well.

They play deep cuts.  They play things that will make you sit up and say, “Hey! I haven’t heard that in ages!”

I had no idea they were based out of Chicago until I did some poking around on their website.  Therefore, I say, root for the home team.

They do not have DJs, but they show the current album playing and the two previous to it.  They do have commercials, but they are few and far between, surviving mostly through banner ads and such.
